In honour of one of the most commercialised dates in the calendar, I wanted to share with you some of my favourite chick flicks. Whether you are single or loved-up, Valentine’s Day is a perfect excuse for super-cheesy, super-soppy rom-com girly indulgence. So grab the other half or call the girls over, tonight is movie night.

P.S. Don’t forget the popcorn.

10. The Vow (2012)

The Vow tells the story of a young couple whose marriage is torn apart following a car accident. Paige (Rachel McAdams) wakes from a coma with no memory of her husband Leo (Channing Tatum) or the life they share. Leo tries to regain her love but with over-bearing parents and an ex-boyfriend back in play, that is easier said than done.

Best Bit: Other than the genuinely charming performances of McAdams and Tatum, this film is based on a true story and is proof that true love is real.

9. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Journalism graduate, Andrea (Anna Hathaway) lands one of the most sought-after jobs at a prestigious fashion magazine. The trouble is, Andrea does not appreciate the finer things in fashion. Obviously, there is a romantic element to this film but ultimately it is about being true to yourself.

Best Bit: Emily Blunt! This was her breakout role as she adds further evidence to the idea that nicest people are best at playing the bitches. Also, fun little fact for ya… Emily introduced her sister to co-star Stanley Tucci at an event for this film and the two are now happily married.

8. Valentines Day (2010)

A star-studded cast navigate the minefield that is Valentine’s Day in a series of inter-connected stories (think, Love Actually). Not satisfied with the boy-wins-girls-heart storyline, this film shines a light on many different types of love so now matter your status, there is something for you.

Best Bit: Probably the most understated one in the whole movie, but I love the Julia Roberts storyline. Oh, and the two Taylors.

7. The Time Traveller’s Wife (2009)

The third Rachel McAdams film in my list, The Time Traveller’s Wife is a beautiful heart-warming story that will stand the test of time (pun intended, sorry). Henry (Eric Bana) is a man afflicted with a condition that causes him to involuntarily travel through time. The one constant throughout his life is his wife, Clare Abshire (McAdams), but the pressure of this responsibility causes cracks in their marriage.

Best Bit: The amount of feels in this film is phenomenal so get the tissues ready. Also, If you like this film, then I would absolutely recommend the book.

6. Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011)

Middle-aged man, Cal’s (Steve Carell) life is turned upside down when his wife asks for a divorce. Whilst drowning his sorrows in a bar, he meets womaniser Jacob (Ryan Gosling) who takes pity on him and offers to show him how to pull the ladies.

Best Bit: Ryan Gosling. Emma Stone. Dirty Dancing lift. Need I say more.

5. Notting Hill (1999)

A chance encounter with the beautiful and well-loved actress, Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) changes the life of a charming, slightly awkward owner of a travel-book shop, William (Hugh Grant).

Best Bit: I love the seasonal long shot through Notting Hill market, accompanied by Elvis Costello’s ‘She’. Or any scene involving Rhys Ifans’ character, Spike.

4. How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (2003)

She writes a ‘How to…’ column for a well-known magazine and is tasked with finding and losing a guy in 10 days. He is an advertising executive who, in a bid to win a big campaign, accepts a bet that he make any woman fall in love with him. Neither is aware of the others’ agenda.

Best Bit: There are countless funny scenes throughout this film but my personal favourite is the one involving the love fern.

3. Bridesmaids (2011)

From the same people that brought you Knocked Up and 40 Year Old Virgin, Bridesmaids is one chick flick that your boyfriend won’t mind watching. Kristen Wiig is hilarious as the maid of honour who can barely manage her own life, let alone plan a wedding.

Best Bit: Wiig’s meltdown at the bridal shower is honestly how we all feel about weddings. Also, fun fact – Air Marshall John is Melissa McCarthy’s real-life husband.

2. Pretty Woman (1990)

Pretty Woman is an absolute classic. Suave business man Edward (Richard Gere) meets prostitute Vivian (Julia Roberts) and negotiates a deal that changes both their lives forever.

Best Bit: That beautiful red dress and the iconic scene involving the necklace box, which, fun fact, was unscripted, meaning Roberts’ reaction was genuine.

1. Dirty Dancing (1987)

As difficult as it was to choose my top twenty chick flicks, there was never any doubt in my mind that Dirty Dancing was going to be in the top spot. The timeless story, the music and memorable quotes makes this film a true classic.

Best Bit: I’m sure it doesn’t really need to be said but the final dance and that lift are without a doubt the best bit of the film.

So there you have it, my top twenty chick flicks. As I said, there were many I considered and had to cut so I’ll be really interested to hear what you would have included in your own lists.
