Deck the halls with boughs of holly, ’tis the season to be jolly. That’s right, December is here and Love Popcorn is feeling Christmassy.

Throughout December I am hoping to share a few festive reviews so if you are looking for something to watch this month be sure to keep checking out my blog. I’m starting off with a Netflix original The Knight Before Christmas, starring Vanessa Hudgens and Josh Whitehouse.

The film sees a fourteenth-century English knight, Sir Cole (Josh Whitehouse), sent to modern-day Ohio in order to fulfil his quest. Something every knight must do, apparently, to become a true knight.

He befriends a kind teacher, Brooke (Vanessa Hudgens) who, after hitting him with her car (Thor, anyone?) , takes him in and helps him navigate his strange new world, learning along the way that maybe fairytales, and true love, is real.

The story, which is a little thin and lacking in depth, starts off with more cheese than even Wallace & Gromit can handle but it does mellow out fairly quickly, although it does have more holes than a piece of swiss (sorry!). If you don’t think about it too hard, this film is actually a surprisingly enjoyable watch.

Hudgens and Whitehouse are likeable enough as the two leads, with good chemistry between them. The supporting cast, including Emmanuelle Chriqui (Madison), Ella Kenion (Old Crone) and Isabelle Franca (Claire) are, again, likeable enough but a little one dimensional. They give off a ‘filler’ vibe and don’t really do a lot to drive the plot forward, which says a lot considering the ‘Old Crone’ is the one who gives Sir Cole his quest in the first place.

Reading this back, I don’t seem to have a lot of good to say about The Knight Before Christmas but it was honestly a thoroughly enjoyable watch, and with just a ninety-two minute runtime it is a perfect option for something to watch whilst your wrapping up all your Christmas goodies.
