Have you ever wondered where the legend of Santa Claus comes from? Why we write him letters? Or why we have all of our little Christmas Eve traditions? Well, Netflix have provided us with some answers in their heart warming new Christmas film, Klaus, which is perfect for the whole family.

When Jesper’s (Jason Schwartzman) spoilt and selfish ways distinguish himself as the Postal Academy’s worst ever student, his father (Head of the Postal Academy) sends him off to an ever-so distant, frozen island to set up a postal office. He is given a year to succeed or risk being cut off from the family fortune and the luxury that comes with it.

Unfortunately for Jesper, the feuding locals are more concerned about exchanging insults and blows than letters but, just as he’s about to give up, a chance encounter with a mysterious carpenter (J.K. Simmons) brings just the opportunity Jesper needs to get out of his icy punishment. However, their unlikely partnership sets off a series of events that will melt even the iciest of hearts.

Klaus delivers a heart warming and surprisingly funny take on a Father Christmas origin story that still manages to maintain the sense of magic and wonder that we all associate with this most wonderful time of the year.

This gift of a story comes with some great voice work from Schwartzman and Simmons, and is supported by the likes of Rashida Jones, Joan Cusack ( who coincidentally stars in Netflix’s other new Christmas movie, Let It Snow) and Norm McDonald; and is all wrapped up in the bow that is the absolutely stunning animation.

Considering the advancements that have come about in animation over recent years, there is a real nostalgic look and feel to this film, that fits perfectly with the timelessness of the story. This directorial debut for Sergio Pablos offers a perfect balance between old school Disney style animation with Pixar-esque storytelling, which, given my slight obsession with Pixar films, is one of the biggest compliments I can offer.

To say I loved this movie is an understatement, it has comfortably cemented its place within my top ten of the year. In fact, we are watching it again this weekend when we put up our tree which I am pretty sure will become a new tradition.

Forget the popcorn, this film calls for a tub of Celebrations and a steaming mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows, so snuggle up with your loved ones and prepare to watch your new favourite Christmas movie.
