Oscars 2021 – Best Actor

We’ve already taken a look at the Best Picture and Best Animated Feature Film nominees for the 93rd Academy Awards, so I figured we would take a look at the nominees in the acting categories. First up – Best Actor.

Anthony Hopkins – The Father

In Florian Zeller’s The Father, Anthony Hopkins portrays an elderly man struggling to come to terms with his changing reality caused by the onset of dementia, and refuses the help of his daughter played by Olivia Colman.

Riz Ahmed – Sound of Metal

Drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed) throws himself into his music as a way to keep his demons at bay but when his hearing starts to deteriorate his world is turned upside down and he struggles to adapt to his new life.

Steven Yeun – Minari

In Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari, Jacob Yi (Steven Yeun) is the family patriarch who decides to relocate his entire family to rural Arkansas in a bid to achieve the ever elusive American Dream.

Chadwick Boseman – Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

In his last performance before his untimely death, Chadwick Boseman plays talented and ambitious Blues musician Levee in George C. Wolfe’s adaptation of August Wilson’s two-time Pulitzer Prize winning play, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Gary Oldman – Mank

In David Fincher’s Mank, Gary Oldman plays the film’s alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish the screenplay for Citizen Kane, a film that is widely considered to be the greatest of all time.
