Christmas is over so while we recover from overstuffing ourselves lets look forward into the new year.

As we prepare to say goodbye to the 2010s and head on in to a brand new decade, I wanted to create a post that celebrates the coming year by looking back and making us realise just how quickly this century has gone so far, my top twenty films that will be celebrating their twentieth anniversary’s this coming year. Plus, it was a fun title even if it is a bit of a tongue twister to say.

As always with my top ten lists, my choices are based on my experiences and memories of film not necessarily by how well they performed at the box office or during awards ceremonies. I think it important to clarify because, even I can admit that there are some questionable films that have made the list, whereas other more popular films have fallen short, sorry Gladiator you didn’t make my cut.

I think it’s also important to state that I was 11/12 during the year 2000, so you may have to forgive me some of my choices 🙂 On that note, here’s my top twenty films from 2000.

20. Road Trip

Four college friends, led by Josh (Breckin Meyer), embark on a road trip in order to receive an illicit tape mistakenly sent to his girlfriend.

Tagline: The greatest college tradition of all time.

Whilst it may not be the best thing to admit, I have a bit of a thing for what is known as ‘gross out‘ comedies. I know it’s immature but I just find sexual innuendo and toilet humour hilarious. Couple that with the age I was when I first watched this film and you can understand why it makes it’s way into my list, which also explains the next entry….

19. Kevin & Perry: Go Large

Two inseparable best friends, Kevin (Harry Enfield) and Perry (Kathy Burke) head to Ibiza with Kevin’s parents. Amongst the sand and the sea, these hormonal teenagers are hoping that they will be able to lose their virginity.

Tagline: All they want to do is… do it.

18. Billy Elliot

Set against the backdrop of the 1984 coal miners strike, Billy Elliot tells the story of a young boy who is torn between the expectations of his family and his unexpected love of dance.

Tagline: Inside every one of us is a special talent waiting to come out. The trick is finding it.

As you may know, biopics are probably favourite genre, they offer a great introduction to some amazing people throughout history. As Billy Elliot is one of the first biopics I remember watching, I have to credit it with igniting my love of biographical pictures.

17. American Psycho

American Psycho tells the story of wealthy investment banker, Patrick Bateman and his journey into his dark, hedonistic psychopathic fantasies.

Tagline: No introduction necessary

I really enjoyed this film but the reason why it doesn’t sit higher up in my list is mainly because, as with a lot of classic films, I was a little late to the party and only watched this for the first time a couple of years ago.

16. Meet The Parents

Male nurse Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) wants to propose to his girlfriend, Pam (Teri Polo) but first he has to meet the parents. If that’s not daunting enough, Pam’s father is strict, grumpy and ex-CIA with a lie detector in the basement.

Tagline: First comes love, then comes the interrogation.

15. How The Grinch Stole Christmas

This live-action adaptation of the classic Dr Seuss tale is set in the magical town of Whoville where the residents all love Christmas. The reclusive and vengeful Grinch (Jim Carrey) hates Christmas and comes down from his mountain top home to steal Christmas from the oh-so-cheerful Whos. A young Who girl, Cindy Lou (Taylor Momsen) tries to befriend the Grinch and save Christmas.

Tagline: All Whos beware: he’s mean and green!

14. Loser

Another juvenile entry in my list but I don’t care lol, Loser tells the underdog story of the good-natured but decidedly ‘uncool’ grad student Paul (Jason Biggs) who strikes up a friendship with a pretty coed (Mena Suvari) who is dating their literacy professor.

Tagline: Dare to be different.

13. Little Nicky

Sweet and mild-mannered Little Nicky (Adam Sandler) is the youngest son of Satan himself, when his older brothers begin to wreak havoc on Earth and his father begins to fall to pieces (literally), the fate of humanity rests on his shoulders.

Tagline: If your father was the devil and your mother was an angel, you’d be messed up too.

12. Dude, Where’s My Car?

Jesse (Ashton Kutcher) and Chester (Seann William Scott), two simple stoner dudes, wake up one morning after a heavy night of partying and cannot remember where they parked their car. As they search for their car, they begin to piece together the events of the night before. Essentially, this is an early example of the same premise that gave the Hangover films so much success.

Tagline: After a night they can’t remember, comes a day they’ll never forget.

11. Memento

Based on a short story written by Jonathan Nolan, and given Christopher Nolan’s directorial magic, Memento tells a back-and-forth story of a man trying to avenge the murder of his wife. His mission is made all the more difficult by the fact that he suffers from short term memory loss, but by consulting the many, many notes he makes, he slowly begins to the piece the puzzle together, right up to it’s surprising conclusion.

Tagline: Some memories are best forgotten.

10. Charlie’s Angels

Natalie (Cameron Diaz), Dylan (Drew Barrymore) and Alex (Lucy Liu) are three kick ass detectives that work for Bosley (Bill Murray) and the mysterious Charlie. When tasked by Knox Industries to identify the person who stole its revolutionary voice-recognition software, they stumble upon a secret puts them all in danger.

Tagline: With these Angels around, you can count on all hell breaking loose.

9. Miss Congeniality

When a serial killer indicates that his next target is the Miss United States beauty pageant, the FBI decides to send in someone undercover but the only viable candidate is bumbling agent, Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) who has a strong disdain for pageant types and a distinct lack of poise.

Tagline: She’s got a killer to catch… right after the swimsuit competition.

8. 28 Days

A vastly underrated film, 28 Days tells the story of a newspaper columnist who is forced to enter rehab for drug and alcohol addiction, after ruining her sisters wedding and crashing a stolen limousine.

Tagline: The life of the party… before she got a life.

7. Final Destination

A teenager heading to Paris on a school trip has a terrible premonition of the plane exploding with he and his classmates suffering terrible deaths. He manages to persuade all small group to leave the plane, and they watch on in shock as his premonition comes true. They may have managed to cheat death this time but he is coming for them all one by one.

Tagline: Death is the Final Destination, boarding starts now.

This unexpected smash hit sparked a franchise that spanned five films over eleven years, and cemented its place in our hearts. Even today, I hate driving behind lorries with dodgy loads. Just in case…

6. Hollow Man

After years of experimentation and research, a team of scientists lead by Dr. Sebastian Caine (Kevin Bacon) discover a way to make matter invisible. Keen to progress his research to the next stage, Dr Caine volunteers himself as a human test subject, but when his team are unable to turn him back, it takes a dark toll on his personality.

Tagline: What would you do if you were invisible? How far would you go?

5. Cast Away

A FedEx executive (Tom Hanks) is marooned on a deserted island after his plane crashes into the ocean. Cut off from the world, and human contact, he is mentally, physically and emotionally tested in his bid to survive and return home to his girlfriend (Helen Hunt).

Tagline: At the edge of the world, his journey begins.

4. Coyote Ugly

Violet Sandford (Piper Perabo) is a bit of a wall flower, preferring to stay out of the spotlight, she heads to New York City to realise her dreams of becoming a successful songwriter but finds it to be much more difficult than she imagined. In order to survive in the Big Apple, she gets a job at a city’s most renowned hot spot, ‘Coyote Ugly’, a bar featuring a team of strong, resourceful women. As she learns to navigate city life, she starts to come out of her shell and realise that if she wants her dreams to come true, she’ll have to go out and them herself.

Tagline: Tonight, they’re calling the shots.

3. Bring It On

New cheer-captain Torrence (Kirsten Dunst) is ready to lead her squad to a sixth national championship trophy with a highly polished routine but when she learns that the previous captain stole their routine from an inner-city squad, she has to scramble to regain the faith or her squad, come up with a new kick-ass routine and prove that they deserve the title.

Tagline: Winning isn’t everything — it’s the only thing.

2. Gone In 60 Seconds

When his younger brother’s life is at stake, retired car thief Memphis Raines (Nicholas Cage) is tasked with stealing 50 cars in three days for crime lord, Ray Calitri (). In order to have any chance of succeeding he enlists the help of his old team. Raines and his team need to pull of the impossible car heist in just one night, with an old detective hot on their heels.

Tagline: Cut to the chase.

1. X-Men

In a world where both mutants and humans exist, and are discriminated against, two groups form an inevitable clash: the X-Men led by Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and the Brotherhood led by Magneto (Ian McKellan).

Tagline: Evolutions Begins

Although I did not learn to appreciate the source material of superhero films until I had met Mark, I always enjoyed the sheer escapism that they offered, and from what I can remember, X-Men was my first foray into this particular genre. It is for that reason that it sits in the number one spot.
