Series Review: Emily in Paris (2020)

One of the things about having too much choice on the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime is deciding what to watch. A quick ‘let’s have a look’ turned into a binge watch and a midnight bedtime.

Lily Collins stars in Netflix comedy-drama Emily In Paris (2020)

When her boss’ unexpected pregnancy presents an opportunity, Emily, a smart young American woman takes her place in a new position at a Parisian marketing firm, despite not speaking the language.

As stereotypes and cultures collide, Emily tries to make her mark and pave her way in a new city with new people including a frosty new boss and a sexy neighbour.

This series is the definition of easy watching with short, easy to digest episodes and great costume design. For all you fashionistas out there, Emily in Paris is a veritable smorgasbord of wardrobe inspiration.

Although it is a bit toned down and pared back for the current social climate, there is very much a Sex and the City vibe to the whole series. Unfortunately, there isn’t a whole amount of substance despite trying to highlight and challenge the tropes of marketing and social media/influencer culture, asking questions of reality, sexism and masochism.

The only disappointment for me was the ending, or lack thereof. In all honesty, the series didn’t so much as end but just stop, there was no real closure or cliffhanger to make you anticipate a second season. That being said, I am glad that Netflix have announced a second season. If they build on the foundation of the first season and deliver a slightly better ending, then I’ll be a happy bunny.

Overall, this is a fun and lighthearted series great for passing the time. Roll on series 2.

I haven’t seen this, but I might give in eventually. I’ve been sort of treating it the same way I did Gossip Girl, never watching but endlessly looking up all the outfits.

I’m not into fashion AT ALL but there were some super cute outfits in it.

I don’t do series television (except for The Mandalorian) but I have been chipping away at this one. You’re right, it’s very lighthearted. But it also has this quirky charm that I kinda like.
