Series Review: Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting An Internet Killer (2019)

Cinema does a fantastic job of creatively highlighting all the horrible things that humans are capable of doing to each other but if there is one fundamental truth about the human race, it is that nothing unites us more than its intolerance to those who cause harm to animals. And, let’s be honest, regardless of whether you are a cat person or not, we’ve all watched funny cat videos online at some point or another to help us pass the time, or to brighten up our day.

In this post I will be reviewing the Netflix documentary, Don't F**k With Cats: Hunting An Internet Killer (2020)

Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting An Internet Killer is a three episode docuseries from Netflix that tells the story of a group of normal people, complete strangers, who help to track down who starts by posting an online video of himself killing some kittens, before moving on to bigger prey.

As you can probably imagine, this documentary is not for the faint hearted and whilst they do not show the shocking videos in full, they do show enough to make their point.

Brilliantly edited, what initially seems to be quite clear cut is actually full of twists and turns and you will find yourself shifting from certainty to doubt and back again.

If you are anything like me, a big fan of crime programmes, then you would probably believe that you would make a good super sleuth but, as this documentary shows, it actually takes an inordinate amount of time and effort to make even the smallest of progresses, dramatically impacting your life and mental health.

And whilst they did get some satisfaction from knowing they helped catch a killer, an important question was asked…

By giving people like this the focus and attention they crave, are we then complicit in their actions?

I watched this for the first time during quarantine as well and I enjoyed it. When it first came out, I wrote it off even though I like true crime, but I’m glad I finally came around to see it.
