Film Review: The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part (2019)

When the idea of a LEGO movie was first announced, there was a feeling that Hollywood were kind of scraping the bottom of the idea barrel. It was a stretch to even imagine how the humble LEGO brick could be turned into a viable concept for a film. Against all odds, The LEGO Movie was a hit and well received, as were the two spin-offs that followed, and a new movie franchise was born.

The Lego Movie Chapter 2: The Second Part

Five years after saving Bricksburg from President Business (Will Ferrell) and the dreaded Kragle, Emmet (Chris Pratt) and the gang are thrown into another adventure; this time to save their city from the invaders from Planet Duplo.

Given that the potential of LEGO is restricted only by one’s imagination, I was hoping that the same could be said for The LEGO Movie: The Second Part. Unfortunately, the constructs of the story are disappointingly familiar to the first. Now, while the younger audience will probably not notice this similarity, but if you are a more seasoned viewer then the predictability and sentimentality of this sequel may slightly tarnish your viewing experience. But, I suppose given the target audience is families with children, that can be somewhat forgiven.

One thing that can be said for the LEGO franchise is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. There are several genuinely laugh-out-loud moments, easter eggs and inside jokes, many of which will go over the head of children but the adults will appreciate.

If, like me, you have only just got the irritatingly catchy ‘Everything is Awesome’ out of your head then you may want to avoid this film for a while, as it makes another appearance, admittedly with a slightly more depressing edge. Not only that, but there is a host of other songs added into the mix. I’m not sure how many songs are required to turn a motion picture into a musical but The Second Part is definitely there or thereabouts. Surprisingly, they are actually pretty good and fans of the DC universe might appreciate ‘Gotham City Guys’.

It probably doesn’t need to be said but the animation was as impressive as the first. The clever mix of animation and live action was another interesting element but was used to the same effect as the first film.

Overall, The LEGO Movie: The Second Part is a pretty good family film with enough humour to keep the adults entertained, but a slightly disappointing storyline. However, I was not particularly fond of the first film until I had seen it a couple of times, so my opinion may change after a second viewing.

Grab the kids and check it out. Let me know what you think.
