I will hold my hands up and admit that all of Adam Sandler’s movies fall very firmly into the B-movie category and Murder Mystery is no exception. However, sometimes a hard-hitting, thought provoking intellectual masterpiece is not what you want when you fancy a good old fashioned duvet day, and in that respects, Sandler is always a solid choice.
After fifteen years of marriage, failed New York detective Nick Spitz (Adam Sandler) finally takes his wife, Audrey (Jennifer Aniston) on a honeymoon to Europe. On the flight, they meet the charming English man, Charles Cavendish (Luke Evans) who invites them to his family’s yacht for a dream trip to Monaco that quickly turns into a nightmare.
Murder Mystery does exactly what it says on the tin, capitalising of the ‘who-dunnit’ clichés of the genre made famous by the likes of Agatha Christie’s, Poirot. The typical Sandler posse is replaced by the likes of Luke Evans, Gemma Arterton and Adeel Akhtar, giving the typical Sandler comedy a slightly smarter edge.
The film is fast paced, and has some surprisingly well shot action sequences, including a high-octane car chase through a picturesque Italian village. For me, there was a surprising amount of intrigue throughout, however I am someone who likes to enjoy the journey, rather than trying to guess the ending. The humour, a staple of a Sandler feature, is a little more understated and intellectual than what we are used to from him, but that is by no means a bad thing.
Ultimately, this is a film that does not take itself too seriously, but offers up a finer affair than Sandler’s usual work, so if you fancy a duvet day you should definitely consider checking this one out, at a little over ninety minutes, you can’t really go wrong.

I wasn’t going to bother (I loved old school Adam Sandler and Fifty First Dates was the last film of his I liked), but I might try this! It sounds like an easy watch.

i kept on seeing this on netflix and at first i wasnt sure what it was a about. i thought maybe they were doing a spoof or a parody or something about solving a mystery. like it really confused me to be honest.
we were celebrating my oma’s 87th birthday on saturday (july 13) so family came over. and my cousin’s husband (ron) was talking to me about Stranger Things, and i never got into that. and i just told him that “a new season came out and a lot of people are raving/going crazy about it.” my cousin’s son (will), i believe he’s 12, he said that “all the girls in his school watches it and he never got into it.” so ron told will “you should watch it to get the ladies to like you.” i just laughed. but than ron went into talking about Murder Mystery, and i told him that “i havent seen it i dont even know what it it’s about actually.” and Will went on saying that “he loves this movie and he has seen it so many times.” and they both agreed that i should watch it.
so now that i know the gist of this movie, i probably will end up watching it. it’s been a while since ive seen an adam and jennifer movie together. the last one ive seen i believe was Just Go With It. and i thought that was pretty funny.
I think MM is more tolerable than much of Sandler’s recent work. That’s about the highest compliment I can give while maintaining my honesty! 🤣
