Oscars 2022 – Best Actor

After the rather chaotic calendar of the last couple of years, the Oscars are back to their normal schedule meaning that the January Blues have been somewhat brushed away with the announcement of the nominations for the 94th Academy Awards. We’ve already taken a look at the Best Actress nominations so let’s gender-flip it and check out the Best Actor nominees.

Andrew Garfield – Tick, Tick… BOOM!

Despite not having much of a musical background, Andrew Garfield put everything into his portrayal of Jonathan Larson, the revered theatre composer trying to navigate life, love and friendship on the cusp of his 30th birthday in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut Tick, Tick… BOOM!, earning himself a second Oscar nomination.

Javier Bardem – Being The Ricardos

Starring alongside fellow Oscar nominee Nicole Kidman in Aaron Sorkin’s Being The Ricardos, Javier Berdem’s performance as Desi Arnaz – the husband to Kidman’s Lucille Ball – has earnt him a fourth Oscar nomination.

Bardem’s on-screen wife Kidman is competing against his real-life wife Penelope Cruz for the Best Actress nomination, so it could be a golden night in the Cruz-Bardem household.

Will Smith – King Richard

Even the most sport-averse people have heard of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams, written by Zach Baylin King Richard sees Will Smith earn his third Best Actor nomination for his performance as Richard Williams, the father and driving force behind the superstar sisters’ success.

Benedict Cumberbatch – The Power of the Dog

Benedict Cumberbatch picks up his second Oscar nomination for his role in Jane Campion’s western drama, The Power of the Dog, based on Thomas Savage’s 1967 novel of the same name. In it, Cumberbatch plays Phil Burbank, a charismatic rancher who inspires fear and awe in those around him.

Denzel Washington – The Tragedy of Macbeth

Denzel Washington receives his ninth – yes, ninth! – Best Actor nomination for his portrayal of William Shakespeare’s Scottish King, Macbeth, in Joel Coen’s adaptation of the Shakespeare’s classic play, The Tragedy of Macbeth.

And the Best Actor Oscar goes to…

  1. What a stacked category. Personally I lean towards Denzel. They’re all good, but Denzel really impressed me. So good.

      I’m rather ashamed to say that I’ve only seen Garfield’s performance so far, I need to try and rectify that as soon as possible.
