Oscars 2021 – Best Actress

The culmination of the 2020 awards circuit is just around the corner with the 93rd Academy Awards taking place on the 26th of April. We’ve already taken a look at the Best Picture, Best Animated Picture and Best Actor nominees (check them out if you haven’t already) and now it’s time to celebrate the women nominated in the Best Actress category.

Andra Day – The United States Vs Billie Holiday

Andra Day plays the American Jazz and Swing musician known as Billie Holiday, as the film follows her career as she is targeted by the Federal Department of Narcotics in an undercover sting operation led by her ex-lover Federal Agent Jimmy Fletcher.

Carey Mulligan – Promising Young Woman

Carey Mulligan was making waves for her performance in Emerald Fennell’s black comedy Promising Young Woman long before the film’s official release. In it she plays Cassie, an emotionally scarred medical school dropout who avenges the death of her best friend by preying on the misogyny of men.

Vanessa Kirby – Pieces of a Woman

Pieces of a Woman is a heart-breaking and deeply affecting character study of personal love, loss and grief. Vanessa Kirby delivers the heart and soul of the film as Martha, a woman who must come to terms with the loss of her child.

Viola Davis – Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Viola Davis is Ma Rainey, the legendary and fiery ‘Mother of the Blues’ as she engages in a battle of wits against her white manager and producer over the control of her music.
