Oscars 2020 – Best Picture

Brush away those January blues, it’s awards season and the nominee’s for the most coveted award in cinema have been released. Let’s have a little look at the 2020 nominees for most coveted award of them all, Best Picture.

Ford Vs Ferrari (Le Mans ’66)

This biographical drama from director James Mangold tells the story of American car designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and driver Ken Miles (Christian Bale) as they build a revolutionary new car for Ford, and challenge Ferrari at the Le Mans 24hr race in 1966.

The Irishman

The first of Netflix’s two ‘Best Picture’ nominees, The Irishman sees hitman Frank ‘The Irishman’ Sheeran (Rebert De Niro) look back on his life working for crime bosses Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) and Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino).

Jojo Rabbit

This satirical comedy from Taika Waititi tells the story of Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis), a young boy in Hitler’s army, who finds out his mother (Scarlett Johansson) has been hiding a Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic.

Joker

Joker offers a dark and intense character study of one of the most iconic villains of all time.

Little Women

Based on the 1869 novel by Louisa May Alcott, Little Women tells the story of the March sisters, four young women who are determined to live life on their own terms.

Marriage Story

Netflix’s second nominees, and featuring a stellar cast including Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, Laura Dern and Ray Liotta, Marriage Story offers a incisive and compassionate look at the breakdown of a marriage and the heart-wrenching impact of divorce.

1917

Inspired by stories from his grandfather, Sam Mendes’ 1917 tells of two young British soldiers, Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) and Schofield (George MacKay) who are tasked with an impossible mission; to deliver a message deep in enemy territory. The lives of 1600 men, including Blake’s brother, depend on their success.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

It’s 1969 and the Golden Age of Hollywood is coming to an end, TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) attempt to reignite their struggling careers whilst living alongside successful new stars, Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and Roman Polanski.

Parasite

The first South Korean movie to ever be nominated for any Academy Award, Parasite tells the story of the poor and unambitious Kim family – mother Chung-sook, father Ki-taek and their two adult children Ki-jung and Ki-woo – who do as little as possible to get by. When a chance opportunity arises for Ki-woo to become an English tutor for the wealthy Park family, the Kim’s spot an opportunity for a lucrative scam.

My Pick…

I still need to watch a couple of these, although Parasite isn’t released in the UK until 2 days before the winners are announced, but my pick for the Best Picture Oscar goes to…

    I’m ashamed to say I haven’t heard much about any of these – with the exception of Joker. I’ve heard only good things so maybe I should give it a go!

      Don’t worry, I’ve not watched a lot of them and I’m supposed to be a movie fan!!
      Definitely give Joker a go, it narrowly missed out on my favourite film of 2019.
