Oscars 2020 – Best Actress

The 2020 Oscar ceremony is just around the corner, it’s time to take a look at this years shortlist for Best Actress. And the nominees are…

Cynthia Erivo – Harriet

In this film from director Kasi Lemmons, Cynthia Erivo plays the titular character, Harriet Tubman, a woman who escapes from slavery and becomes an American hero when her courage and tenacity helps free hundreds of other slaves.

Scarlett Johansson – Marriage Story

Scarlett Johansson had a brilliant year; Avengers: Endgame has made over $2 billion, she received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her turn in Jojo Rabbit but the icing on the cake is her Best Actress nod for her portrayal of Nicole Barber, a woman going through a messy divorce.

Soirse Ronan – Little Women

Ronan plays Josephine ‘Jo’ March, a teacher in New York City who reflects back and forth on her life, weaving the beloved tale of the March sisters, four women determined to live life on their own terms.

Charlize Theron – Bombshell

Receiving her third Oscar nomination, Charlize Theron takes on the contemporary role of Megyn Kelly, a female news anchor who became the face of 2016 Fox sexual harassment scandal.

Renee Zellweger – Judy

Musical biopics have had great success over the last couple of years, and the latest star to get the cinematic treatment is the great, Judy Garland, as Renee Zellweger steps into her ruby red slippers.

My Pick…

Its so hard to choose a favourite between such a great group of women but my vote goes to Saoirse Ronan. After missing out on that shiny statue three times in the past, I really want her to finally win one.

With the exception of Theron (who isn’t terrible), these are very deserving nominees. There are some stacked acting categories this year.
