The 2020 Oscar ceremony is just over a week away!
We’ve already had a little look at the nominees for Best Animated Film and Best Picture, now it’s time to have a gander at the shortlist for Best Actor.
Antonio Banderas – Pain & Glory
In Pain and Glory, Antonio Banderas plays a groundbreaking gay filmmaker, Salvador Mallo, coming into the latter stages of his life and career. When one of his early triumphs is set for a re-release, Mallo reconnects with the star actor and slowly learns to make peace with his past.

It’s 1969 and Hollywood is changing, veteran actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) fears his career is coming to an end, especially considering the new talent that is starting to come through from the likes of actress Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and director, Roman Polanski. Seeing a chance to revive his flagging career, Dalton attempts to befriend the young couple.
Adam Driver – Marriage Story
Driver plays Charlie Barber, a well respected Theatre Director whose marriage has ended. As the divorce proceedings turn into a messy battle of wills, he must do everything he can to keep his family close and business going.
Joaquin Phoenix – Joker
In this standalone film from director Todd Phillips, Phoenix takes on a character study of, arguably, one of the most iconic and mysterious villains in cinema, the Joker.
Jonathan Pryce – The Two Popes
In this biographical drama from Netflix, Pryce plays the role of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, an archbishop who wishes to resign from his post following a scandal with the Vatican. His resignation is rejected and instead he is offered the role of Pope, becoming Pope Francis, after the unprecedented abdication of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI (Anthony Hopkins).
My Pick…
This year was an incredibly close year and there was an awful lot of competition for this role. Considering Taron Egerton didn’t manage to make the shortlist, despite winning Best Actor at the Golden Globes, my pick goes to…
Joaquin! Woohoo
I may not have gone for him myself but he would definitely be a worthy winner.
Phoenix gets my vote, he is fantastic!
Mind you, not seen any of the other films on the list 😉
I’ll admit it was a close one so I won’t be too disappointed if Phoenix wins.
