Murder Among The Mormons (2021) Series Review

Netflix have been churning out the goods at a surprising rate this year, with something new dropping pretty much every week. Following on from the rather lacklustre The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel, their latest true crime docu-series Murder Among The Mormons delivers in a way that The Vanishing just didn’t.

In this post, I review the Netflix true crime docuseries Murder Among The Mormons (2021)

Using a combination of archival news footage, reenactments and present day interviews, Murder Among The Mormons chronicles the events surrounding a series of bombings and the shocking web of deception that rocked the Mormon community of Salt Lake City in October 1985.

Despite the relatively short series length, creators Jared Hess and Tyler Measom take their time unravelling the story. The first half of the series has a bit of a whodunnit vibe, giving the audience an insight into the world of historical document collectors and the potential impact that new pieces can have on the very foundations of a person’s faith. And although the first half may start off a little slowly, it really helps to set up the shocking revelations of the person responsible for, and the reasons behind, the bombings.

The level of deception portrayed by the killer is unparalleled. Not only deceiving those closest to him but also duping numerous experts including those in the FBI. The scientific explanations provided help with the how, and are pretty interesting in their own right, but it is the emotional interviews with those closest to the culprit that really drive home the long term impact that one person can have on the lives – and faiths – of so many.

For those of you who, like me, may have watched a few too many documentaries or episodes of Criminal Minds, you will probably figure out quite early on who the bomber was but don’t let that put you off as it doesn’t dampen the shows impact. In fact, the retelling of the bombings is more of a gateway into the bigger, and ultimately more shocking, crime that occurred. One that has possibly shaped the history of the world as we know it.

And yes, I know that probably sounds a little melodramatic but watch Murder Among The Mormons and you will see I’m not wrong.
