Hidden Gem: Colombiana (2011)

Hey Folks!! It’s been a little while but I figured that it’s once again time to celebrate a hidden gem so if you are looking for something to watch with the other half this weekend, then grab the popcorn and check out action flick, Colombiana.

In this post I review the 2011 film Colombiana starring Zoe Saldana.

Director: Olivier Megaton

Starring: Zoe Saldana, Jordi Molla, Beto Benites, Michael Vartan

Tagline: Vengeance Is Beautiful

Amandla Stenberg plays a young Cataleya in the 2011 film Colombiana.

After nine year old Cataleya (Amandla Stenberg) witnesses the murder of her parents by Colombian drug lord Don Luis, she escapes to find her uncle in America.

Nearly fifteen years later, Cataleya (Zoe Saldana) is a professional assassin with a quest for vengence, leaving a trail of bodies and a very special calling card behind her. With the FBI hot on her tail, will she be caught before she can enact her revenge?

Anyone even a little bit familiar with Saldana’s work will know that she can handle action very well and Colombiana is no exception. She gives us a well balanced performance that is tough yet vulnerable, ruthless yet sweet. And although there is the obligatory romantic angle and the outfits don’t leave too much to be desired, it is nice to see a female assassin delivered in such a way. Too often they are either devoid of emotional connections or they are overtly sexualised.

The film’s action is tense, thrilling and varied enough to keep you entertained throughout. There is strategy and intrigue as well as the stereotypical but oh-so-fun explosion filled action packed climactic showdown.

Not surprisingly, Colombiana doesn’t make any bold new strides in the genre but the film was well paced and the action sequences were well thought out, so if you’re looking for some easy watching this weekend then give this film a watch.
