Not only did the end of 2019 see us say goodbye to the 2010’s but also to a great many shows and film franchises, here’s a little round-up of some of those that we lost going into the new decade.
I tell you something though, 2020 has got some big shoes to fill…
Star Wars (1977-2019)
I can’t write a post about the ending of an era without talking about one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, with the ninth main Star Wars being released in December. The Rise of Skywalker saw the culmination of the space epic that began way back in 1977.
Game of Thrones (2011-2019)
The critically acclaimed fantasy series aired its final, and rather divisive, season back in April. Personally, I was a big fan of season eight and was very happy with how it played out, although I seem to be somewhat in the minority. Avengers (2008-2019)
Way back in 2008, Marvel Studios took a massive gamble, not just on the character of Tony Stark but also the troubled actor they cast to play him, Robert Downey Jr. But gamble they did, with Iron Man kicking off the Marvel Cinematic Universe we all know and love. Eleven years later it’s fair to say that their gamble paid off with all four Avengers films hitting the billion dollar mark.
Although technically the torch of the MCU has been passed on to new heroes, this May saw us say goodbye to many of the Avengers that we know and love.
Big Bang Theory (2007-2019)
As with many long-running TV series, over time Big Bang Theory began to face a bit of a backlash, with many claiming it was unfunny and bland. However when the final episode aired in May, over 18 million people tuned in to watch. Not bad for a nerdy group of scientists.
X-Men (2000-2019)
Although technically not the last we are going to see of the X-Men, following Disney’s merger with Fox back in March, Dark Phoenix (released in June) does mark the end of the X-Men as we know and love them.
Orange is the New Black (2013-2019)
This popular prison drama from Netflix has been on my need-to-watch list for such a long time but for some reason I still haven’t got round to it. That being said, OITNB developed a strong viewing platform from very early on with reports claiming that over 105 million viewers have watched at least one episode (source). I promise OITNB fans, I will get round to watching it soon.
Jessica Jones (2015-2019)
When Disney started planning for their new streaming service, Disney+, a number of popular Marvel series on Netflix were cancelled way before their time, much to the chagrin and anger of the fans (coincidence?!). One of which focused on the escapades of the kick ass, super-powered private investigator Jessica Jones.
The Punisher (2017-2019)
Another victim of the Disney+ Netflix slaughter was the dark and gritty series focusing on the much loved anti-hero, Punisher played by Jon Bernthal.
Gotham (2014-2019)
I was a little apprehensive about Gotham to begin with but it wasn’t long before it reeled me in and kept me hooked. The fifth and final season aired back in January, with the finale marking not just the end of the DC series but also the show’s 100th episode.
The Good Place (2016-2020)
Yes, technically the series finale of The Good Place will air in January of 2020 but the fourth and final season of this comedic gem originally started streaming on Netflix in September so that’s why I have included it in my list.
Let’s be honest, 2020 is also looking to be a little bittersweet with another host of popular series due to end, including: Vikings, 13 Reasons Why, Criminal Minds, Stranger Things and Lucifer.

Some really good observations. I didn’t really think about how many series/franchise came to an end this year.
There’s been so many, I could probably have written a whole other post and still not be done lol.
It’s a bit sad to be saying goodbye to so many great franchises but I am excited to see what the new decade will bring.

I loved the BBT finale – the whole of the final season definitely wasn’t it’s best, but I think they really made up for it in the last two episodes!
