Film Review: Peppermint (2018)

Despite the unfortunate experience that Outside The Wire turned out to be, this weekend we once again decided to go with an easy watch, with the 2018 action thriller film, Peppermint from Taken director Pierre Morel.

In this post I review the 2018 film, Peppermint, starring Jennifer Garner.

With money a little tight, Chris North considers helping a friend rob powerful drug lord Diego Garcia but ultimately turns the job down. Instead he and his wife Riley head to the Christmas carnival in a bid to save their daughter from having the worst birthday ever.

As the family are enjoying ice cream – “Peppermint. Double scoop” – they are gunned down by Garcia’s cronies and only Riley survives. Helped by detective Stan Carmichael, she identifies the killers but a corrupt judge releases the suspects due to a lack of evidence.

Riley disappears and five years later Carmichael finds the suspected killers hanging from the Ferris Wheel, execution style. With the FBI and the police hot on her trail, Riley makes her way through the ghosts of her past to her final target, Diego Garcia.

Peppermint (2018)

Peppermint is a typical revenge thriller with the air of a gender-swapped Law Abiding Citizen or John Wick, and has everything we’ve come to expect from the genre. The story is well paced and full of great action sequences and Jennifer Garner seems to really enjoy revisiting her vigilante roots.

I would love to offer more of a commentary about the film but unfortunately Peppermint doesn’t really have much of a point of difference and while the viewing experience overall was quite enjoyable, the story itself is a little too predictable and ultimately rather unforgettable.

Overall, this is a great watch if you want something easy to pass the time but if you want something that is going to stick with you then this is not the film for you.
