David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet (2020)

My review of Netflix documentary film, David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet.

The term ‘National Treasure’ gets thrown around far too often for my liking but even I have to admit that it is perfectly apt as a description for Sir David Attenborough, who at 93 years old has been exploring, documentary and sharing the living world for over 60 years.

His latest film A Life On Our Planet comes swiftly on the heels of his Netflix documentary series Our Planet (2019) and serves as his witness statement reflecting on some defining moments in his life and the devastating changes he has seen in his travels across every continent on the globe.

From the get go, it is clear that Attenborough is trying to personally reach out to each and every person. Attenborough’s message is delivered straight into the camera and is interspersed with historical footage from Attenborough’s impressive and expansive career, striking yet harrowing images from the natural world that he is trying so desperately protect and simple facts and figures to really drive home his point.

Over his many documentary series Attenborough has used his platform to share his concerns about our future, deliver messages of hope and pleas for change. As the years have gone by, his messages have become more poignant and desperate, and if A Life On Our Planet is his swan song, it is definitely a powerful one.

A powerful yet hopeful legacy.

For all those climate change deniers out there, this documentary delivered in Attenborough’s calm and distinctive way is hard to ignore. And for those of you who don’t need to be persuaded on the science, it is a call to arms.
